Will BTS members’ mandatory military service be delayed?

And take note, one of them is supposed to join the military by the end of next year

ICYMI, Korean boy group Bangtan Sonyeondan, more popularly known as BTS, has topped charts worldwide with their new song “Dynamite.” But with their rising fame and busy careers comes an issue, their military service issue.

This concern came to light because Jin, the oldest BTS member born in 1992, is due to join the military by the end of next year, according to the current laws in South Korea. And with the youngest member Jungkook’s enlistment still some time away, fans may not see the group complete in the next 5 years.

With this, the Korean government and various political circles are reportedly taking careful consideration about delaying the enlistment of BTS members. According to a report from AllKpop.com, one possible measure includes delaying the group’s enlistment for 5 years so that Jin can join the army at the same time as Jungkook, who was born in 1997. That way, everyone could complete the mandatory service at the same time.

Before this proposal was suggested, Representative Jeon Yong Ki of the Democratic Party of Korea suggested revising the existing military service law on delayed enlistment. In this proposal, individuals who are recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and have contributed to increasing the national prestige in pop culture and the arts would have been eligible for the delay.

Currently, the military service law allowed for the delayed enlistment until the age of 28 for individuals who have made contributions in sports, but the proposed law includes individuals in the fields of pop culture and arts. But with Jin’s enlistment coming close, perhaps it is time for the Korean government to discuss this issue.
