7 Things You Might Not Know About BABYMETAL, Japan’s Pop-Metal Phenomenon

When you think of Japanese pop (J-Pop), you probably imagine bubblegum hooks, flashy dance moves, and kawaii energy. When you think of heavy metal, you picture roaring guitars, headbanging, and pyrotechnics.

Now, imagine smashing those two worlds together, and you’ve got BABYMETAL, Japan’s legendary pop-metal trio that has been winning over fans across the globe.

If you’re still wondering what the hype is all about, you’ll get the chance to experience it live soon: BABYMETAL is bringing their explosive world tour to Manila on October 8, 2025. Mark your calendars because this is one show you won’t want to miss.

Before you dive headfirst into BABYMETAL’s music, here are some fun facts about the band that prove why they’re one of Japan’s most unique and unforgettable acts.

1. They started as a J-Pop idol sub-unit

Believe it or not, BABYMETAL began as part of Sakura Gakuin, a Japanese idol group known for splitting members into themed sub-units. Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto), Moametal (Moa Kikuchi), and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno, who retired in 2018) formed the Heavy Music Club, which eventually evolved into the BABYMETAL we know today.

2. The Fox God mythology runs deep

Behind the band is an elaborate lore created by producer Kobametal, centered on the mysterious Fox God, a deity who supposedly brought the trio together to spread metal resistance. Their concerts, music videos, and even a graphic novel tie into this fantastical storyline, making each performance feel like part of a larger saga.

3. They pioneered “kawaii metal”

BABYMETAL didn’t just make music; they created a whole new genre. Dubbed kawaii metal” (cute metal), their sound mixes sugary J-Pop vocals with face-melting metal instrumentation. The result is a style so unique that even die-hard metalheads can’t help but headbang to songs like “Gimme Chocolate!!”

4. Lineup changes and The Avengers era

After Yuimetal left the group in 2018, BABYMETAL introduced rotating backup performers called The Avengers. One of them, Momometal (Momoko Okazaki), officially joined as the third member in 2023. Together with Su-metal and Moametal, they form today’s powerful trio.

5. They’re crossing genres and borders

From performing with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Judas Priest’s Rob Halford to collaborating with Bring Me the Horizon, Skrillex, and even Indian metal band Bloodywood, BABYMETAL has proven they can blend into almost any musical world. Their viral collab with German group Electric Callboy even gave them their first #1 on a Billboard chart.

6. Beyond Music: games, TV, and film

BABYMETAL’s influence isn’t limited to music. They’ve appeared in video games like Super Mario Maker, composed the theme for Cartoon Network’s Unikitty!, and even made cameos in the Finnish metal comedy film Heavier Trip.

7. Their Japan shows are pure spectacle

Lasers, pyro, massive video screens, and choreographed crowds, a BABYMETAL concert is less of a gig and more of a full-on theatrical experience. Fans don’t just watch the show; they become part of it.

Whether it’s synchronized chanting or bowing down to their “metal goddesses,” the atmosphere is unlike anything else in live music.
