Angelica Panganiban Opens Up About Battling Bone Disease

Angelica Panganiban talked about the painful bone disease she had been battling for almost a year. In her recent vlog dated November 18, she revealed that she’s suffering from avascular necrosis, a death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply, causing the bone to collapse.

The celebrity mom said her hip pain began during the sixth month of her pregnancy in 2022, “May mga iniinda akong sakit sa hips. Well, nagsimula to nung nabuntis ako. Siguro mga six months into pregnancy, mayroon na akong mga nararamdamang sakit on my hips.

At first, she thought it was part of her pregnancy, but the pain persisted after giving birth to her first child, Amila Sabine. When she returned to working out and doing yoga, she felt pain in the left part of her hip.

She recalled her Palawan trip with Amila Sabine, her husband Gregg Homan, and celebrity friends Glaiza de Castro and Ketchup Eusebio in March 2023, when she couldn’t walk, swim, and workout at all.

Since the pain worsened, she and Homan went to the hospital, “Nagpatingin na ko, so na-ultrasound ako.

Panganiban said she went on therapy for two months, which helped ease the pain. However, it came back in a week after finishing the therapy.

She continued, “Hanggang sa nagkaroon ng isang time na talagang hindi na ko makalakad again. Sobra akong in pain. Iyak ako nang iyak.”

Homan brought her to the hospital, where she was injected with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This process involved taking a blood sample to be placed in a machine to serve as a treatment for the painful areas.

The 37-year-old continued her routine until the pain returned, and she couldn’t walk again. Upon undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), she revealed that the results showed she had avascular necrosis or “bone death.”

“Avascular necrosis is bone death, namatay na yung mga bones ko sa aking balakang kaya pala hirap na ko maglakad, talagang yung mobility ko hindi nasosolusyunan kahit pa anong gawin kong strengthening,” she explained.

The bone specialist offered surgery as a solution, which frightened her, so she opted for a conservative approach.

But this time, nag-drill sila ng hole. Ininject nila yung PRP directly doon sa dead bone. Masakit ba yung procedure? Di ko inakalang masakit sya. Tulo nang tulo yung luha ko.”

Panganiban expressed her distress about her condition, knowing the cause of avascular necrosis is steroid abuse, which she admitted she never uses.

She also shared that the procedure was done on November 17, and was on bed rest while filming her vlog. Despite her condition, she remained positive and hopeful.

She hoped for a quick recovery and looked forward to going back to work in 2024.

“I’ll keep you posted.
