On March 22 (Filipino time), Alex defeated world No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko in the Miami Open with a score of 7-6(2), 7-5. The Latvian tennis player was a former Grand Slam champion.

With this historic feat, the Filipina tennis player achieved several career milestones. She became the first Filipina to defeat a multiple Grand Slam winner and the first to beat a player ranked in the worldโ€™s top 25.

This is not the end! The Filipina tennis star proved that the universe was in her favor when she knocked out Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the same tennis event with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

Madison is an American tennis player ranked the world No. 5 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). To date, she has won 10 career titles.

Following her win against the American tennis player, the 19-year-old tennis standout is the first player from the Philippines to ever beat a top 10 player since the ranking system came into play in 1975.

On March 24, the WTA took to social media to recognize her landmark win.

She will be facing Spain’s Paula Badosa in the fourth round.

Alex Eala is now the highest-ranked Filipina singles player in WTA tour history, surpassing Maricris Gentz. She also became the first Filipina player to bag a junior Grand Slam singles title in 2022.

Congratulations!
