Aside from acting, what keeps Pepe Herrera busy nowadays is pursuing his passion of preserving the environment. He does this by collecting garbage, which in his small little way, he believes can help keep the oceans clean. When he isn’t actively doing any acting project, he goes back to the sea to collect garbage as he shared on his Facebook account.
Hi I’m back. As a garbage collector. It felt really good again. Pero aaminin ko, I still get affected by reactions of people who don’t take what I do seriously. Mula nung simulan ko magpulot ng basura sa kahit anong dalampasigan na madaanan ko, I have seen sarcastic facial reactions and remarks from people that for me seemed like a way of saying “you’re wasting your time and making a fool out of yourself.” Minsan, naiinis pa din ako. At medyo napapahiya. But that doesn’t mean I’m stopping. I’m way far from stopping. This is a lifelong commitment and I’m just getting started. You see, I don’t aim to collect all the trash by myself. Whenever I collect garbage, my aim is to encourage others (tourists and locals) to do the same. In a non forceful manner. Kahit isa lang ang gumaya masaya na ako. Kasi naniniwala ako na yung gagaya ay makikita din ng isang gagaya. Hanggang sa dumami nang dumami ang gaya-gaya. Kasi ganun din naman sa mga nagkakalat ng basura. Gayahan lang. At naniniwala ako na likas sa Pinoy ang pagiging magaling sa panggagaya. And that’s not bad, just to clarify. Nagiging pangit lang naman ang panggagaya depende sa gagayahin. And if it’s not hard to throw trash anywhere, it’s also not hard to pick it up. It’s actually a good core and leg workout. Tamo ganda ng abs ko. Hehe.
