According to Science, Crying Can Actually Help You Lose Weight

AsiaOne reports that a recent study points to crying as actually aiding in weight loss. This is because the act of emotional crying is tightly linked to hormones which raise the cortisol level. Cortisol is the hormone which affects your immune response and importantly, your metabolism.

So keeping your feelings in causes the cortisol levels in your body to heighten which leads to increased fat in the abdomen if they have no release. When said high-intensity emotions are let go through crying, then the fat build-up is also let go.

Biochemist William Frey adds that crying also helps in removing different toxic substances within the body. He explains

Crying is an exocrine process. That is, a process in which a substance comes out of the body. Other exocrine processes, like exhaling, urinating, defecating and sweating, release toxic substances from the body. There’s every reason to think crying does the same, releasing chemicals that the body produces in response to stress.

However, for it to work the crying has to be of the emotional sort. Forcing yourself to cry or tearing up because of stimulants won’t work as it fails to trigger the necessary hormones. So if you happen to feel like crying over an ex, stress from school or work, or even a recent fight — at least you’ll be looking good afterward!
