Marks & Spencer Isn’t Leaving the Philippines—Here’s What’s Actually Happening

Marks & Spencer, the British retailer, is set to end its partnership with Stores Specialists, Inc. (SSI) but will remain in the Philippine market under a new franchise partner. The update comes after SSI, Marks & Spencer’s local partner for over two decades, announced that all 19 of its stores nationwide will close by May 2, 2026.

In a statement, SSI said the decision followed careful consideration, acknowledging the role Marks & Spencer has played in its retail portfolio and thanking customers, employees, and partners who have supported the brand through the years. SSI noted that evolving consumer preferences and changing shopping habits were key factors behind the move, prompting the company to focus on brands that better reflect the current and future retail landscape.

Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer clarified that the brand remains committed to the Philippines.

“After over 20 years of partnership with the SSI Group, we have made the decision to transition to a new franchise partner to support our ambitious growth plans in the region,” a spokesperson said. “We remain committed to the Philippines and the growth opportunity in the region.” The company added that updates on its growth plans will be shared in due course.

SSI emphasized that the transition will be managed carefully in coordination with employees and stakeholders. Additional details on store schedules, promotions, and customer advisories are expected to be released closer to the May 2 closure date.

Marks & Spencer first opened in the Philippines nearly 40 years ago, becoming a familiar presence in local malls known for its British heritage, apparel, and food offerings.
