“Spider-Man: No Way Home” just became the first movie of the pandemic era to make $1 billion! According to Sony, the latest movie in the Marvel franchise crossed $1 billion at the global box office last Sunday.

The star-studded movie had its world premiere at Fox Village Theatre in Los Angeles last December 13. It was first released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on December 15, and then in the United States on December 17. It was originally set for release earlier in July but was pushed back to November 5 before being further shifted to the December 2021 date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet to be released in four more countries (Japan, Philippines, Slovakia, and Norway respectively), the record-breaking film has already reached the milestone in just 12 days after its initial release. Only 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” (5 days) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (11 days) have reportedly reached that mark in less time. It is also reportedly the first film to reach $1 billion since the release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in December 2019 and is now the top-grossing film of the year worldwide.
Furthermore, “No Way Home” has reportedly notched a record-breaking opening weekend at the North American box office. Bringing home $260 million, it is now the second-largest domestic opening of all time. It is also reportedly the best ever for each of the months of December, the Spider-Man franchise and Sony Pictures.
The third sequel to the Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland is part of MCU’s Phase Four and will be released in the Philippines on January 8.
