Johnny Depp Loses Case Against ‘Wife Beater’ Claim by British Tabloid

After a long battle, Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has lost his libel case with British tabloid The Sun that claimed he was a “wife-beater” in an article published in 2018 regarding his relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard.

The London High Court judge ruled on Monday, November 2, that he had repeatedly assaulted his former partner and put her in fear for her life during their five-year affair.

“I have found that the great majority of alleged assaults of Ms. Heard by Mr. Depp have been proved to the civil standard,” said Judge Andrew Nicol. “The claimant has not succeeded in his action for libel.”

Heard had accused Depp of binging on drugs and alcohol and often threatened to kill her, among many other instances of physical violence. Depp had repeatedly denied the allegations and called himself a victim of an “elaborate hoax” being played for Heard’s benefit. His ex-partners, Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder, have also spoken up to his defense amid the ongoing case.

The Sun said the ruling was a “stunning victory” for press freedom.

“Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court,” the tabloid said in a statement.
