K-pop stars Jung Joon-young and Choi Jong-hoon Sentenced To Prison For Sexual Assault

South Korean K-pop singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young and musician Choi Jong-hoon were convicted of gang rape on November 29. They have been sentenced to 6 and 5 years respectively for gang-raping two drunk and unconscious women on two different occasions.

The crimes took place in 2016.

Jung was also charged with filming the assault as well as other sexual encounters with women without consent. He shared this footage 11 times through mobile chatrooms, still without the consent of the women involved.

In addition to their sentence of time in jail, they will also have to go through 80 hours of sexual violence treatment courses. The two have been definitively banned from working with children.

“Jung and Choi took part in gang rape of victims who were intoxicated and unable to resist,” Judge Kang Seong-soo’s verdict read. “It is hard to fathom the extent of suffering the victims must have gone through.”

It also condemned Jung as only viewing the victims as tools of pleasure while Choi  “did not feel remorse after mass-raping drunken victims.”

The case is one in a series of sex and abuse scandals recently plaguing the K-pop world.
