Angelica shared her belief that forgiveness should be for her own benefit, and not anyone else’s. “Mahirap magpatawad kung wala namang humihingi ng tawad. May mga humihingi ng tawad pero hindi nila alam kung anong kasalanan nila,” she said. [It’s hard to forgive if no one is asking for forgiveness in the first place. Then there are those who ask for forgiveness but don’t understand what they did wrong.]
“Naniniwala ako na once nabigay ko na ang forgiveness, ma-se-set free ko na rin ang sarili ko,” Angelica continued. “Dinadasal ko naman na kahit hindi dumating ‘yon, kahit hindi dumating sa tao yung magkaroon siya ng remorse, mag-reflect siya sa kung anong nagawa niya, nagdadasal ako na mapatawad ko siya not for him but for myself lang talaga.”
[I believe that once I forgive, I am able to set myself free. I pray that even if the person never arrives at remorse or never reflects on his wrongs, I pray that I am able to forgive him not for him but really just for my self.]
For Bea, forgiveness is inevitable. She explains that she may not be able to predict when it will come, but it will. “Kung tatanungin ako kung kailan, hindi ko siya kayang sagutin, pero it’s part of the process, it’s part of my healing process.” [If you ask me when, I won’t be able to say, but it’s part of the process, it’s part of my healing process.”
“Kahit hindi hingin [Even if he doesn’t ask], I have to. Forgiving yourself and forgiving someone is about freeing yourself from all the baggage and all the pain you have gone through and just moving forward,” Bea concludes.
