How many times have you gotten your heart broken in your life? How many times have you run to your friends crying about a guy who ghosted you, cheated on you, or just left you hanging? How many times have you begged for company every time something bad happened at school, at work, in love, or in life, in general? People talk about love and pain all the time, but not enough people talk about the people who are always there for them. For me, those are my girl friends; and for that, I am writing this “love letter” to them.
To the girls who come running every time I send a text message that says, “I need to drink”: thank you. There isn’t even a question after that statement. You just show up when I need you. You don’t ask why or tell me off for choosing alcohol as a solution for everything. You’re just there. Now, it might be true that this may partly be because you are also semi-alcoholics like me; but what matters is that you are there to listen and para damayan ako, no matter what.
To the girls who just let me cry when I need to without judgment, without pity, and without even once trying to offer a solution to a mind that wouldn’t listen anyway: thank you. I appreciate you listening to everything I have to say. You just take every word in – even the smallest pieces of bull and the pettiest complaints – without judging me for talking about them, sometimes incessantly.
To the girls who join me for retail therapy, even on the days when you don’t have money to shop for yourself, and for not judging me for buying the same top in three different colors: thank you. Thank you for lifting me up and over-exaggerating your compliments when I try on clothes for hours in the dressing room. Thank you for being honest when an outfit makes me look fat, and for eating ice cream with me anyway even when the muffin top is already getting a bit too much. I also appreciate when you tag me in product posts online when you know I’m going to like a piece of jewelry or a cute top.
To the taken girls who leave their boyfriends behind when I call for a girls’ night out: thank you. I know how hard it can be to get away from a significant other and trying to justify a night out with ‘just us girls’, especially when a guy gets jealous easily or feels insecure sometimes. I appreciate all of the effort that goes into that, even if I don’t say it all the time.
To the girls who give up sleep to talk to me about the most pointless things: thank you. Because of you, I feel less stressed at the end of the day and actually fall asleep with a smile on my face. Thank you for making me feel loved and cared for, for helping me make better decisions, and for making me a better person overall.
