A viral video recently caught what looked to be a foreign tourist allowing a child to defecate on the beach. It also showed another woman burying soiled pampers or underwear in the sand. The Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force (BIATF) has now taken action to ensure the cleanliness of the area.

The portion of the beach where the incident took place was cordoned off for 2 to 3 days. Its closure was ordered so that the BIATF may conduct a testing and clean-up period.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat has assured that the portion was ordered to be marked with signs reading: “No swimming, this area is under clean up.” The area was isolated with markers 100 meters wide. Its water quality was found to be safe after being properly tested.

“This was an unfortunate incident, but we will not tolerate those who violate the law,” Puyat stated. “We encourage the public, who might witness similar incidents, to immediately report offenders to the proper authorities so that they can be promptly apprehended and fined accordingly.”

“We will continue to coordinate with the tour operators and travel agencies in informing our tourists of the proper travel etiquette when visiting the Philippines and the corresponding fines and punishments if these are not followed,” she added.
