Make Up Tips From The Masters: How To Use These Runway Looks In Real Life

Early this month, I had the opportunity to join the MAC SS17 Pro Tour in Mactan, Cebu. Aside from the many bloggers, personalities, and beauty queens in attendance, legendary MAC director of makeup artistry Gregory Arlt was there to teach us a thing or two about the art of painting your face. (If you have no idea who Gregory is, all you need to know is this: he has done make up for the likes of  Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani, Dita Von Teese, Sienna Miller)

Now, I am in no way a make up girl. Although, I do like make up, my make up skills leave much to be desired. My reaction to seeing beautiful make up editorial photos is usually amazement and wonder – how do they make it that pretty and how will I ever apply these brazen make up styles to real life?

The different runway looks

Those were the exactly the questions that make up maven Gregory Arlt answered for me. This season’s trends can be categorized into 4: Real, Free, Wet, and Warm. This is how to apply these looks in everyday PH context:

REAL

Unfiltered and imperfect, this make up look has direct reference to “real make up that real women wear.” The runway saw lots of smudged eyeliner and “broken down” make up looks.

Gregory suggests a bare faced “next to nothing” look and statement lips. The finishing touch was matching lipgloss at the center of the mouth for that extra sheen. Stephanie Zubiri models the easy look below.

FREE

For the free spirited, this look ignores conventional make up rules. It’s very playful and spontaneous.

Gregory suggests colored mascara to embody this look in a way that’s more acceptable for everyday wear. He opted for bright blue mascara on Karylle and the end result was a subtle pop of color.

WET

The wet and dewy look is in, to the delight of Pinays who live in a humid tropical country. A little gloss on the lids does wonders to catch the light and give you that beautiful glow, as Gregory has shown on Miss World Megan Young who was his model for this look.

WARM

Warm, classic sheer tones can emphasize great complexion. The highlight of this look is the skin with a little color – pinkish to peach tints – that heightens the look. The aim is not to transform the face, it is emphasizing what is already there. With the help of some bronzer on the inner portion of the cheeks, beauty queen Bianca Manalo literally shines.
