Working with Booze: 8 Spots in Makati Where You Can Drink and Work

Sometimes we just need a drink to let off some steam. And in most cases, the influence of alcohol loosens us up, allowing creative juices to flow more easily rather than being confined to sobriety among the four walls of the office. So when we do get the chance to head out, whether it be lunch break or an off-site project, it’s a treat to be able to drink and be productive at the same time, meaning Wi-Fi, alcohol and an atmosphere conducive to work. It may not suit all, but it works for a few. So for all the day drinkers out there, we’ve gathered ten places where you can be productive over a cocktail, bottle of beer or glass of wine #WhenInMakati.

1. Crying Tiger

In one of the more relaxed alleys of the Poblacion neighborhood, Crying Tiger is a manifestation of this vibe. Outdoor seating areas complement the open-air interiors giving it a street-style feel as it serves Thai street food along with cheap beer and Asian-inspired cocktails.

2. Dweet

A quiet nook at The Collective in San Antonio, Dweet serves Middle Eastern fare at affordable prices. Expect kebabs and shawarmas from Php 100 – Php 200. But in a busy location, Dweet’s air-conditioned and muffled atmosphere along with cheap beer and cocktails make it the perfect hideout.

3. Z Café

Found at the ground floor of Don Pedro Street’s Z Hostel, Z Café serves up Filipino classics with a twist such as its famous Adobo Flakes. Beer is on the pricey side but still less than Php 100 while typical mixes like Rum Coke also fare at the same range. While the hostel requires an RFID worth Php 300 before you enter, the café’s lazy afternoon vibe is ideal for getting some work done.

4. The Plantation

Along C.Palanca Street in the bustling neighborhood of Legaspi, The Plantation is a good afternoon option for drinks and work. With an outdoor area to accommodate smokers, writing your next report becomes less stressful especially with their early happy hours that that start at 3 PM to 9 PM. The spot is also 24 hours so working in the wee hours is welcome.

5. Trufa

This Barcelona-inspired pasta and tapas bar brings hints of Ilonngo cuisine in its fare. Go after the lunch rush for a more quiet setting and order a glass (bottle) of wine – all at affordable prices. The Tapatsilog and Trufa Pasta has been a winner but if you aren’t feeling like having carbs while you work, go for their tapas including Mediterranean veggies on crostinis and chorizo croquetas.

6. Commune

With a spanking new address at Poblacion, Commune’s two-storey location has become a yuppie’s haven. With craft coffee and wines, so you can interchange each once the alcohol kicks in, the café sports a calm ambience, making it conducive to working away from home or the office. They really are more than just 3D latte art.

7. Single Origin

Another wonderful café that serves craft coffee and wines, Single Origin is located in the posh Rockwell area where one can sit back in one of its many mismatched seats and indulge in a flat white or a glass of Chardonnay as you cram in your workload for the day.

8. Pink Panda

Another successful venture by Erwann Heusaff, Pink Panda’s menu is a modern take on Southeast Asian cuisine. And although it is known for unique staples like their massive Xiao Long Boom and the adorable Panda Buns, their cocktails are a reflection of its owner’s own affiliation with mixology. The spot in Poblacion may seem seedy with neon lights glaring among the area’s chaos, but offers a respite once inside.
