New Found Glory Live in Manila: Pop Punk Is Not Dead

The boys of New Found Glory proved that pop punk is not dead and it’s here to stay when they rocked the stage of SM Skydome last Sunday night. The band performed 20 of their most kick-ass songs, which made all of the pop punk kids mosh like crazy! They opened with an explosive performance of “Selfless”, the carrier single of their new album called “Resurrection”. It was an amazing sight to see the crowd so hyped up already during the first song. I guess that’s the power of pop punk for you!

Even though only three members of the band made it to the show because drummer Cyrus Bolooki had to go back home to his pregnant wife, they still nailed it with their replacement drummer, Mike. Guitarist Chad Gilbert expressed how happy they were to play for their Filipino fans once again following their last performance here with Simple Plan in 2008.

Having the entire Skydome to themselves made the experience even more legit for them as Chad dubbed it their “first real show” in Manila. He thanked the fans for coming out to see them by saying the word “Salamat!” He also promised that New Found Glory would never stop being a band because they love what they’re doing. And as long as we keep tweeting for them to come back to our shores, we can count on them to play another show here in the future.

When the band played “Resurrection”, the crowd went nuts especially during the chorus when Jordan screamed “Watch my resurrection!”  It really is a defining and powerful song, not to mention very inspiring. I’m really happy they played it because I’ve been feeling so down these last few weeks and having one of my favorite bands to tell me to rise up from the ashes made me feel comforted and ready to face the world. After that, the crowd cheered when we heard the intro to the classic NFG favorite, “Hit or Miss”. Once again, we all got taken over by the blasting sound and energy of pure pop punk music.

Before the band played another one of their new songs called “Ready and willing”, Chad gave us all a very inspiring pep talk about success. “If you do what you love, you’ll die happy!” he said as he relates to the crowd everything that they went through as a band; from playing small time gigs to performing around the world. He emphasized the importance of doing things that matter to us and forget about the stereotypical idea of success.

Another highlight of the show is when they played their very famous cover of the Sixpence None The Richer song “Kiss Me”. Everyone sang along and I swear I even saw one of the guards doing it too. It was magical! After that, they dedicated the song “Dressed to Kill” to all the band kids in the crowd which, I think, made half the audience.

My most favorite part of the entire concert came in the form of “My Friends Over You”. This is where the entire crowd truly felt the intensity that is New Found Glory. They really proved to us all that pop punk is very much alive and will continue living as long as we are there to listen.

The crowd asked for an encore and the band gratefully obliged. The band ended the show with three encore songs, finishing it with an unforgettable performance of “All Downhill from Here”. The entire night was so intense that even though the show was over, my heart was still beating like crazy! Indeed, as long as New Found Glory is around, pop punk will never die!
