Tired of having to put up with long queues (and short-tempered clerks) just to transact business matters at SSS/GSIS, Philhealth and HDMF (Pag-Ibig)? (DO I HEAR A BIG YES!?!) Good news! The hassle from transaction delays will come to an end as these agencies will soon implement the modern Unified Multipurpose ID (UMID) System, in compliance with Executive Order No. 420.

According to SSS President and CEO Emilio de Quiroz, Jr., UMID is a single-format card which you can use to conduct business to the said agencies in a faster and more convenient way. The card contains a contactless chip and a magnetic stripe that stores member’s information. The information will be retrieved through specially-designed card readers. Furthermore, each member will be given a lifetime common reference number (CRN) that will be used to transact with the said agencies.
Don’t mistake UMID for the proposed National ID system though since it is not mandatory and its use is limited to the said agencies as of now.
SSS is the first agency to utilize the UMID System since their members comprise majority of the card holders. Next up will be GSIS. UMID card would help members in withdrawing benefits and loan proceeds from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
At present, there are 5,000 IDs already reproduced for the first batch. They will be tested for quality checking before they will be mailed within two weeks.
De Quiroz said that members without SSS cards yet will be prioritized and they will be given for free. On the other hand, those who have their SSS cards issued from 2008 can still use the same card in conducting their businesses. A fee of Php300.00 will be charged as replacement for lost cards.
When in Manila, I am very glad and relieved that the UMID system will finally be implemented here in the Philippines. IT’S ABOUT TIME, don’t you think so? I just hope that the other agencies would follow suit as soon as possible.
