7 Westlife Songs Ranked From Cute to Cheesy

90s babies, rejoice! Our Irish boyband heroes from the late 90’s are back to Manila! Here in the Philippines for their 20th anniversary reunion tour are Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nick Byrne, collectively known as Westlife. They’re here to serenade their Filipino fans, not just for one night, but two at the Araneta Coliseum.

I’ve listed 7 Westlife songs to hype myself up for night, and ranked them from “Awww that’s so cute” up to “Oh my god, wait, wait my heart”.

7 Westlife Songs Ranked From Cute to Cheesy

7. Uptown Girl

Uptown girl
She’s been living in her uptown world
I bet she never had a back street guy
I bet her mama never told her why

The world first heard Uptown Girl in the 1980s, but Westlife made their own version of this Billy Joel song in 2001 and made it the biggest-selling single in Ireland the same year. This song can possibly be the theme song to almost every cliche Pinoy teleserye loverboy to his rich girlfriend because he doesn’t have money, but got the girl anyway because they’re in it for love.

6. World of Our Own

Oh, we got a little world of our own
I’ll tell you things that no one else knows
I’ll let you in where no one else goes
What am I doing without you?

Fast-paced and catchy, World of Our Own is something the Universal Motion Dancers would probably have made a dance craze to. If you want to casually tell someone you want them back after you dumped them and took for granted, but realized you still love and can’t live without them; this is your song.

5. I Lay My Love On You

I lay my love on you, it’s all I want to do
Every time I breathe I feel brand new
You open up my heart, show me all your love
and walk right through, As I lay my love on you

Have you ever had your heart broken? It can definitely be scary to try your luck at love again. However, this Westlife song released in 2000 reminds us about how good it feels to love again – that there is a rainbow after the rain. I Lay My Love on You reminds us that when the person is right, all the love we have to offer will not be wasted and will all be worth it.

4. If I Let You Go

But if I let you go, I will never know
What my life would be holding you close to me
Will I ever see you smiling back at me?
(Oh yeah) how will I know if I let you go?

One of their most popular songs, If I Let You Go, is for those people hiding their feelings for someone and stuck on deciding whether to say it or just keep it to themselves. If you’re too torpe to tell her how you feel, or are too shy to ask her out or too proud to lose her; this song may give you a little push. You don’t want to live with “what ifs”, boy. Go tell her!

3. Fool Again

Can’t believe that I’m a fool again
I thought this love would never end
How was I to know?
You never told me

Oozing with vulnerability, Fool Again may be considered a breakup song. This is good background music for when a girl calls it quits because her guy didn’t know she was already falling out of love. It also reminds us of how important communication is for a relationship to work.

2.Swear It Again

I’m never gonna say goodbye
‘Cause I never want to see you cry
I swore to you my love would remain
And I swear it all over again

Swear it Again is cheese overload. The song is shouting “you and me against the world”. This song makes us want to  believe in the power of love. It’s the perfect reassurance for your S.O., telling them that no matter what the trials may be and no matter what other people may say, they will be taken care of and loved for the rest of their life. Awww!

1. You Raise Me Up

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

An original song by Secret Garden, Westlife released their own version of this song in 2005. This song is an offering not just to significant others, but to anyone who refused to give up on us. For the few people, it could be for that one person who didn’t get tired of raising you up in your darkest days. The lyrics are so simple, basically just repeating the four lines four times throughout the entire duration of the melody. However, it’s that simplicity that makes it so compelling to pull at so many heartstrings.
