5 Ways To Elevate Your Strobing Game

Contouring is so 2015: this year, it’s all about luminous, dewy looks with minimum effort. But don’t be so quick to slather on the highlighter nearest you; you don’t want to end up looking like a shiny mess. Here are 5 ways to elevate your strobing game and keep those highlights on point.

5. Exfoliate and moisturize. Good skin is key to a great strobed look — your skin should ideally be radiating from within. Dry skin will not work with this look. Exfoliate a night before putting on makeup and moisturize before applying your makeup base, so it’s smoothed on.

4. Use a foundation or any base with a dewy finish. A foundation or makeup base (BB creams or tinted moisturizer will work, too!) with a dewy finish will instantly give your face a glowing look.

3. Highlight your face’s “light points”. While contouring focused on applying product to the hollows of your face, strobing works in the exact opposite manner — you’re instead highlighting the high points of your face. In short, the idea is that you should highlight where the light hits you, which will slim your face in a subtler way. The highlight should focus attention towards the center of your face.

The points where you should be applying highlighter are: above your brow bone, just on your cheek bones, the center of your nose, your Cupid’s bow (the tiny groove below your nose and just above the curve of your lips), and your chin.

2. Keep the shimmer to a minimum. Using clear moisturizer or a serum is a subtler way to highlight, but highlighting products traditionally come with shimmer. If so, keep the shimmer to that — you don’t want to look like a glittery, greasy mess. Other products such as your eyeshadow and blush should ideally come with no sparkle. You can put a hint of gloss on your lips, though!

1. Use a setting spray. A setting spray melds your makeup together, perfects the smooth and glowy finish, and helps it stay in place for longer!
