Golden age thinking is the idea that a different time period is better than the one a person is living in. And as weโre about to enter 2017, we wanted to do a #ThrowBackThursday post to remember the great things that happened in 2016.
The year was eventful, but one of the things weโre thankful for is that tons of things from our childhood made a comeback. From our favorite games to movies and TV shows, here are 5 things that made 2016 awesome:
5. Movies
One of the best ways to experience nostalgia is to watch our favorite childhood movies. Hollywood seems to have taken note, as they are creating reboots of favorites. This year, there was Ghostbusters, the all-female group that hunted ghosts in New York City. There are plenty of reboots in the pipeline, but the ones weโre excited for are Jumanji, Mulan, and The Lion King.
4. Vinyl
Vinyl may not be part of the narrative of those born in the โ80s and โ90s, but more millennials are enjoying the benefits of records. According to audiophiles, the scratchy sounds add to the allure of records, and music sounds purer compared to the manufactured perfection of CDs and MP3. Gone are the days of huge record players. Now there are turntables that are portable and cute.
On top of that, stores are popping up all over Metro Manila selling vinyl, like Satchmi, Grey Market, and Cubao X.
3.ย Stranger Things
Perhaps the one thing today that screams nostalgia is the Netflix show Stranger Things. The show is faithful to its โ80s setting, but even the way itโs filmed is reminiscent of the times. Its story of a group of boys searching for their young friend taken by a mysterious alien, and premise of a secret government experiment, reminds older viewers of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg movies. Someone even compiled the visual references the series made to movies of the past.
Everything about the show is perfection, and weโre excited for season 2 in 2017.
2. Anime
Do you remember those weekday afternoons when we would rush home from school to watch our favorite shows? There was Voltes V, Dragon Ball Z, Lupin, and Ghost Fighter. Even if they werenโt as polished as the shows today, we loved it because it was a break from our regular schoolwork. Thereโs also a series of web commercials by anti-bacterial hand spray Hygienix that uses anime-style camera work and reminds us of the show Space Sheriff Shaider. Ah, memories!
1. The Family Computer
You guys may have your Gameboys, Playstations, and Xboxes, but for some, they have the Family Computer. Those pixelated ghosts, plumbers, and monkeys gave so much joy for those who grew up with them, and they can relive it because the Family Computer is being brought back, and has the same look and feel. Life was simpler when all you had to press was A and B, right?
