Will number coding be in effect during GCQ?

Last May 28, President Rodrigo Duterte announced a transition from the modified enhanced community quarantine to a general community quarantine in select parts of the country. However, many are still unsure about exactly what policies will be enforced.

One question that many seem to have is if number coding will be in effect. The answer is a little more complicated than just yes or no.

(What areas will be under GCQ?)

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced this Saturday that the number coding scheme will remain suspended from June 1 to 5, 2020.

However, following June 5, the Metro Manila Council and the MMDA intend to implement a modified number coding scheme.

“Vehicles carrying more than one passenger, depending on the guidelines of the IATF on allowed passengers per type of vehicles, will be exempted from the existing number coding scheme. We want the motorists to maximize the use of private vehicles on the road,” MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia explained.

This means that you will still be able to use your car on ‘coding’ days but there should be at least 2 passengers. However, frontline workers will be exempt from any kind of number coding scheme.
