WATCH Girls Are Empowering Themselves Using a Spice Girls Song!

Whenever someone calls me on my phone, I would answer with “Yo,” then before the caller could say anything, I would continue, “I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want!” It’s a leftover from my childhood, when I would gleefully follow the Spice Girls, the biggest British phenomenon since Beatlemania. Even if I was a huge fan (then and now), I never imagined their song “Wannabe” could be used to empower girls. But it is.

The Global Goals, a campaigning group, created a video of girls lipsyncing to the song “Wannabe,” and empowering women through ending violence and child marriage, and promoting quality education and equal pay for equal work.

The girls in the video are Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, British hiphop group M.O., and other female artists. The video is captioned, “What do you really really want? Girl power has come a long way, let’s take it further.”

The video ends with the hashtag #WhatIReallyReallyWant, and encourages others to use it. The Global Goals also promised to get the messages to world leaders at the United Nations in September for the 71st Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 71).

The hashtag has gone viral, with people like Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, and Emma Watson using it.
