WATCH: All the Visual References of Stranger Things, Revealed!

It looks like the Netflix show Stranger Things is set to become a cult classic. The show follows a group of young boys whose friend goes missing, not knowing that his disappearance is tied to a top-secret government experiment that involves monsters and a creepy parallel universe.

Since it premiered last month (all eight episodes were released simultaneously, as is Netflix’s tradition), Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a 94%, saying, “Exciting, heartbreaking, and sometimes scary, Stranger Things acts as an addictive homage to Spielberg films and vintage 1980s television.” And we agree. Stranger Things is at times funny, sad, and scary. And there’s one thing everyone can agree on: Winona Ryder is amazing and this could should be her ticket to a comeback.

Film buffs and people who grew up in the ’70s and ’80s may have noticed something while watching the series. Some of the scenes look familiar. That’s because it is an homage to ’70s and ’80s cinema, and many scenes in the show take their visual cues from Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Stephen King, and John Carpenter. Stranger Things gets inspiration from movies like Alien, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Goonies, Firestarter, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Stand By Me, Carrie, and The Shining.
