There will be no KathNiel movies this year, says Kathryn Bernardo

Sorry, KathNiel fans, but Kathryn Bernardo and longtime off-screen boyfriend Daniel Padilla won’t be collaborating for any film project this year.

According to Kathryn’s open letter published in Preview.ph, the 23-year-old actress talked about her journey in the entertainment industry and her desire for personal and career growth. She writes:

“If there’s anything I’ve learned while working in this industry all these years, it’s the constant need to evolve. I’ve seen stars rise and fall, and more often than not, the greatest tragedy is when they choose to live in a box.”

She goes on to share the reason for holding back all these years from doing “more mature roles”—her first of which was a kissing scene in Barcelona: A Love Untold in 2016. “I didn’t want to rush things. I didn’t want to do anything I wasn’t prepared for. I took things gradually because I felt it was the right thing to do. But as I grew older, I felt it was about time to finally break out of that shell. While I don’t regret taking my time to grow, I also don’t intend to get left behind.”

She likewise opened up the fact that she and Daniel have made the mutual decision by the end of 2018 to pursue individual projects this year. She says that it’s all part of her growth, which she admits Daniel has been a big part of, to become a better actress and a better person.

“We both know it’s going to be tough for both of us and maybe even tougher for our fans, but we really gave it some thought, and while there’s nothing we want more than to make you happy, we’d appreciate if you can give us this year to pursue our individual growth this time around. It’s a risk, and I’d be lying if I told you that the idea doesn’t scare me, but at the same time, I’m excited to discover what kind of opportunities await us both in this journey.”

Previously, rumors of the two breaking up spread after Daniel reportedly unfollowed Kathryn on Instagram but the actress quickly turned down the rumors, claiming it was only an accident that sometimes happens to her too. These rumors were further shut down when Daniel surprised Kathryn last March 17 during her production number on ASAP Natin ‘To with a bouquet of flowers. He tells her, “Ako ay laging nandito para sa ‘yo, para sumuporta, para prumotekta at mag-alaga at pasayahin ka. I love you very much, Bal.”

Kathryn is set to star in an upcoming film with Alden Richards this year under the direction of Cathy Garcia-Molina, the director behind KathNiel films The Hows of Us and She’s Dating the Gangster. The movie will partly be set in Hong Kong and will tackle the topic of Overseas Filipino Workers.
