Confused by the title? So was I. But after watching the movie, I think I understand why the decision was made to call it The Suicide Squad and not Suicide Squad 2. This is the way the first Suicide Squad movie should’ve been made to begin with.
If you weren’t a fan of the first movie or felt like something was simply lacking while you were watching that one, you should definitely give this one a try. Joker, a fan-favorite DC villain may not be in it, but I absolutely loved it. Here’s why:
The Director
After James Gunn of The Guardians of the Galaxy movies was fired from the third installment (don’t worry; he has been reinstated!), he worked on The Suicide Squad – and he gave it exactly what it needed: epic music, amazing visuals, and a whole lotta spunk. There are a lot of scenes in this movie that will stick in your head way after watching it – from Harley’s flowery battle scene to the final battle scene. In fact, the first scene on its own is already sure to make a mark in your head.
The Cast
The cast is amazing! Margot Robbie aside (who doesn’t love her?), you’ve also got Idris Elba, John Cena, Michael Rooker (who also made us bawl in Guardians of the Galaxy), Viola Davis, Pete Davidson, Peter Capaldi (from Dr. Who!), Sylvester Stallone (as a shark!), and even a small but beautiful cameo from Taika Waititi.
The Characters
The more you watch this movie, the more you’ll find yourself wondering how in the world they chose the characters that would be in it. They feel so random and let’s face it: they’re weird. I mean… Weasel? Ratcatcher 2? King Shark? POLKA-DOT MAN!??!? In an interview with Den of Geek, James Gunn shares that he was given complete freedom to decide which characters to bring back from the first movie. Harley was definitely a given, but he also says that the characters he chose were based on creative decisions for the story that he wanted to tell. And it works really well. As weird as they may be at times, it really worked towards the movie’s charm. Or at least I thought so, anyway.
The Humor
The Suicide Squad is also incredibly funny. Granted, I was having wine while watching it so that may have had something to do with it… and I’m known to be quite mababaw when it comes to humor, but I found The Suicide Squad funny and hella entertaining. There are lines that made me laugh out loud and there were scenes that made me laugh out of pure shock. If you don’t take the movie too seriously, I’m sure you’ll have a good time watching it, too.
The Action
There are a lot of satisfying action scenes in this movie – and that’s very important to me when I watch superhero movies. I love action. I love blood. I love stunts. And this movie does not disappoint. And oh, there are a lot of (unexpected) deaths. Lol. I’m sure you’ll love it.
Overall, The Suicide Squad is a fun and entertaining movie you should watch over the weekend (if you can). Watch it with your partner, your friends, or your family, and just enjoy the ride.
