When in Manila, if you grew up wondering how it feels like to be stared upon by the wide-eyed tarsier and if you find fireflies really beautiful to look at, then you must really visit Bohol.
Tarsiers are amazing creatures. Known as the world’s smallest primate, they are solitary and nocturnal.
In Bohol, there are a few places where you could see the tarsiers.ย We had our personal interaction with the tarsiers at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary at Corella because the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), the leading organization of tour operators and tourism advocates, forwards responsible tourism.
At Corella, tarsiers are free to move around the forest; thus, away from stress. It actually made it more exciting for us since the visitors have to find the tarsiers with the help of a guide. It was an adventure!
Since tarsiers have to turn their heads (they can turn their heads up to 180 degrees!) because they can’t turn their sockets, it was really hard for the group to take decent pictures. We had to take turns! It was a test of patience because we didn’t want to get really close to the tarsier. The sanctuary also forbids it for the tarsiers’ protection.
On the other hand, it was also nice to join a firefly tour when you’re in Bohol. At Abatan River Cortes town, you’ll be able to marvel at the sight of thousands of fireflies enveloping their host trees while riding a motorized sampan.
As you may already know, taking pictures or videos of fireflies is no easy job. No one in our group got to take a decent photo. But the experience was worth a thousand pictures combined. It was really wonderful to see how blessed Philippines is! I think couples will find it romantic too!
When in Manila, let’s appreciate the beauty of our country by having personal experiences with nature. A Bohol tour is a good stop for the sight of tarsiers and fireflies can motivate you to see other places too. Good thing PHILTOA has something in store for those who would want to visit Bohol. Be sure to visit the Philippine Travel Mart on August 10-12 at the SMX Convention Center to score the best deals!
