Barangay 20 in Tondo, Manila has been placed under 24-hour lockdown by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno after its residents violated the regulations of quarantine and social distancing amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country.
According to Manila’s Public Information Office (MPIO), nearly 100 residents were caught engaging in social leisure games like bingo and boxing in a video posted on social media. This prompted Mayor Isko to draft Executive Order No.
19 wherein residents of Barangay 20 will be restricted from leaving their homes, excluding health workers and members of the law enforcement agency.
“The video shows blatant violations of the enhanced community quarantine guidelines and social distancing protocols thereby creating immense risk of exposure and contraction of COVID-19 to those involved in the event,” the executive order said.
All commercial, industrial, retail, institutional, and other activities in the barangay will be suspended during the lockdown. Control of the barangay council’s operations will also be handed over to the local government unit.
The 24-hour lockdown will start on Tuesday night, April 14. Police officers from the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 2 have already been deployed to enforce the lockdown.
As of writing, the enhanced community quarantine over Luzon is scheduled to end on April 30. There are 4,932 confirmed cases in the Philippines with 315 deaths and 242 recoveries.
