If you’ve seen the Ice Age movies, you’re probably familiar with Scrat. The saber-toothed squirrel (whose name is a combination of squirrel and rat) is obsessed with collecting acorns even if it endangers his life.

Scrat and his many misadventures have become a running gag and the mascot for the co-animation studio, Blue Sky Studios.

After 20 years, five movies, four short films, and a video game, Scrat finally gets his acorn.

Watch the video below:

The clip, unlisted, is short and only lasts 34 seconds. In it, we see Scrat sniffing around and finding an acorn. He grabs it and is about to slam it into the ground until he has an epiphany and takes a bite. He pauses for a second, probably waiting for one of the many misfortunes that arrive when he finds a nut. But nothing happens so he finishes it and leaves.

There’s a touching story behind it.

Blue Sky Studios, which worked on the Ice Age franchise, closed down in April 2021.

When the clip was released on YouTube on April 14, 2022, the caption read, “In the final days of Blue Sky Studios, a small team of artists came together to do one final shot. This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms.”

Disney acquired Blue Sky in 2019 and announced that it would be closing down the studio due to the economic impact of the pandemic. Disney still owns its titles, and even released the series Ice Age: Scrat Tales on Disney+.

When Blue Sky Studios announced its closure last year, Chris Wedge (the co-founder and voice of Scrat) wrote a letter to friends and followers.

He said, “For the past thirty-four years, we, like our single minded character Scrat, have reached for something that at times seemed unattainable. Yet time after time we’ve managed to get our arms around our own versions of that elusive acorn.”

He added, “Unfortunately, it’s not possible to hold on to anything forever.”

The letter ended with, “We’ve had more fun bringing our movies to life than anyone should be allowed. We hope you’ve been able to feel some of that joy.”
