RISE Charity Event: Giving Hope to the Children of Tahanan Sta. Luisa

More than awareness and self-empowerment, the one-day charity event RISE brought so much hope to the children of Tahanan Sta. Luisa. The program was held last April 29, 2016 at SM City Manila Cyberzone Event Center and was opened by the Most Exalted Sister, Aca Almelor µΣΦ ’16, with her welcoming remarks. The hosts who helped in energizing the crowd were Dan Concepcion of Class 2020 and Trina Villanueva of Class 2020.

RISE: Redefining Independence and Self-Empowerment, A Charity Event for Tahanan Sta. Luisa

Five separate waves of self-defense classes were conducted with the guidance of the coaches of the Philippine Karate-do Federation. The participants were taught how to defend themselves during day-to-day scenarios, with the use of nothing but their extremities and items that are of everyday use, such as umbrellas and water bottles. Between each class were inspiring talks by women who had undergone different plights but who were there for a single goal: empowering others.

The first talk featured the author Trish Kaye Lleone, who spread awareness about the culture of rape. The next speaker, VJ Kat Alano, shed light about victim blaming. Lisa Macuja, a world renowned ballerina, delivered a speech about dreaming and working hard to reach even the most impossible goals. Lastly, Helen de Leon, an abuse survivor from Women’s Crisis Center, shared her story on how to rise and recover from the traumatic experience that she faced.

As the program was about to end, Ms. Anna Aban, social worker from Tahanan Sta. Luisa, gave a short presentation about what Tahanan Sta. Luisa is all about. The girls of TSL then gave a song and dance number that touched the hearts of the audience. Lev Nonog of class 2020 ended the event by thanking everyone who supported the cause. This event truly Redefined Independence and Self-Empowerment!
