Pantone just announced 2019’s color of the year

I have to admit, I never really understood the excitement behind Pantone’s color of the year. Don’t get me wrong — I’m as hyped up as anyone right now and already anticipating all the shiny new products in this newly anointed hue. I just don’t get the logic behind it.

How can someone simply say ‘this will be the new color of the year’ and make it so? Is it a predictive ability or a trend-setting one? Is it a little bit of both? Well, whatever the answer, what we can say for sure is that it’s effective.

From rose quartz and serenity to ultra violet, Pantone has shown us their ability to influence product development and marketing decisions on the whole. Next year’s color of Living Coral looks to be on a strong start already.

Pantone describes the color as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” It is said to be inspired by the feeling of warmth, connectivity, and intimacy. Its lighter tone is meant to signify the brightness and optimism we all need in our lives, especially in this day and age.

Its pivot to a color deeply connected to nature may even point towards environmental consumerism. As Pantone puts it, “Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.” Hopefully, that serves as enough of a reminder for individuals and corporations alike to make environmentally conscious decisions this 2019.
