Osaka’s famous pufferfish has been taken down

Zuboraya restaurant has had the honor of having the most popular fugu (pufferfish) balloon hanging around outside in the sky for years now. But as of Thursday, September 3, the beloved icon is gone. Rest in power, precious pufferfish.

It was taken down in the early hours of Thursday morning by a crew and driven to a holding area/warehouse where its fate will still be determined. On the windows of the restaurant is a paper that says, “Thank you for your longtime patronage. Be well, everyone. Well then! Goodbye.”

Watch the video of it being taken down below:

Many restaurants and businesses were hit hard by COVID-19 and this restaurant was, unfortunately, one of them. It saddens us to know that the pufferfish is gone and the restaurant has had to close. There’s so much to handle already plus this? Sad emojis. 🙁

Locals are clamoring to still have the fish displayed somewhere, so maybe there’s still hope for it. We hope for the best for the Zuboraya staff, too.
