Neil Patrick Harris Gets Married!
Neil Patrick Harris, the world’s most famous womanizer (as his legen-wait for it-dary character Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother), has announced that he has married his long-time partner David Burtka last weekend in Italy. He made the announcement on Twitter last night:
According to @ActuallyNPH, “Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband’.”
Neil Patrick Harris is a respected stage, film, and TV actor, who became famous for his role as Doogie Howser in Doogie Howser, MD in 1989 when he was 16 years old. But his most famous role is Barney in HIMYM, earning him millions of new fans. Since then, he appeared in movies like Harold & Kumar (Escape from Guantanamo Bay and 3D Christmas), Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, Beastly, The Smurfs, The Muppets, and the upcoming Gone Girl. What many do not know is that Harris is also a successful theater actor, acting in Rent, Sweeney Todd, All My Sons, and the recently concluded Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

In 2006, he came out of the closet, saying, “I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.” The following year, he introduced his partner, chef David Burtka, and they had twins in 2010 via a surrogate mother.
Harris and Burtka announced their engagement in 2011 after New York passed the Marriage Equality Act. They actually proposed to each other in 2006, but kept it secret until same-sex marriage was declared legal.
HIMYM director Pam Fryman officiated the wedding during the weekend, while Elton John performed at the reception.
