Meet the Ghost Type Corsola, a Pokemon Based on Dead Coral

Corsola Dead Coral

The concept of climate changed has entered the Pokemon universe.

In the Sword and Shield version of the Japanese game, a new Pokemon is introduced based on dead coral. Meet the Galarian version of Corsola, a ghost type Pokemon.

Corsola is a Pokemon that was introduced in 1999 in the Gold and Silver versions, but this variation debuted in Sword and Shield. It is unique to the Galar region and is described as a “Pokémon [that] absorbs others’ life-force through its branches.”

“Sudden climate change wiped out this ancient kind of Corsola,” the game adds. The character is bleached white, a reference to coral bleaching that happens when algae that live inside them leave, which happens when water temperatures become too hot.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), coral reefs are among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth, largely due to unprecedented global warming and climate changes. Over the last three years, reefs around the world have suffered from mass coral bleaching events as a result of the increase in global surface temperature caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. UNESCO adds that if we don’t do anything about it, coral reefs in all 29 reef-containing World Heritage sites would cease to exist by the end of this century.

Based on a report by the Huffington Post, as much as half of the world’s coral has disappeared since 1980.
