Here’s Why Marian Rivera Can’t Be Dingdong Dantes’ Leading Lady in ‘Descendants of the Sun’

Marian Rivera has finally quashed rumors that she will be playing the leading lady of her husband Dingdong Dantes’s character, Capt. Lucas Manalo aka Big Boss (originally portrayed by Song Joong-ki), in the local adaptation of Descendants of the Sun.

Ang hirap talaga eh kasi ang layo, Nueva [Ecija] ‘yung location nila. Tapos walang uwian, two days straight, wala silang uwian,” Marian told the media during a press conference for GMA-7’s drama anthology show Tadhana.

She expressed how difficult the shooting schedules are for her especially when she’s the one taking care of her two children: three-year-old Zia and five-month-old Ziggy.

So paano ‘yon? Kaladkad [dala-dala] ko si Ziggy sa taping? Tapos si Zia nag-aaral, ako ‘yung hatid-sundo sa anak ko,” she added.

(“It’s really hard because their location, Nueva Ecija, is too far. And they don’t come home. They don’t come home until after two days. So how will that go? Will I bring Ziggy along to taping? Not to mention that Zia has school and I’m the one who brings her there and fetches her afterward.”)

Although she won’t be able to act alongside Dingdong in the series, she’s optimistic that another chance will come in the future.

“Siyempre looking forward naman talaga ako na makatrabaho ko pero sabi ko nga, siguro sa tamang panahon.”

(“Of course I was looking forward to work with [Dingdong] but, as I said, maybe in due time.”)

For now, she wants to take things step by step regarding the showbiz projects she’ll accept.

Minsan kasi mahirap magsabi na ‘Oo’ o ‘Hindi,’ malay mo may magandang project din naman ‘yung GMA para sa akin. Pero sabi ko nga, gradual. ‘Tadhana‘ [first] and then after ‘Sunday PinaSaya‘ and then after, baka may isang show akong gawin and then, malay mo, soap opera ulit,” she said.

(“Sometimes, it’s hard to say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ You’ll never know, maybe GMA has a good project in store for me. But, as I said, I want to take things gradually. ‘Tadhana’ first and then ‘Sunday PinaSaya’ after, and then maybe I’ll do another show, and then maybe a soap opera again.”)

As of now, the filmmakers of Descendants of the Sun have yet to confirm who will play Dr. Maxine Kang (originally played by Song Hye-kyo) after Jennelyn Mercado dropped out of the project.
