‘Your Name’ Director Beats Own Opening Day Record With New Film, ‘Weathering With You’

Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi No Nawa (Your Name) broke box-office records by becoming the highest-grossing anime film of all time, even surpassing Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. It seems that his newest film succeeding that unprecedented hit may be following in its footsteps. If its first-day earnings are anything to go by, we may even see Shinkai’s Weathering With You outperform Kimi No Nawa.

According to the film’s distributor, Toho, its opening day gross reached 118% of Kimi No Nawa. It was released in 359 theaters with 448 cinemas in Japan last July 19, 2019. These numbers are likewise higher than those of Shinkai’s previous film with the new one appearing in 63 more theaters and in 147 more cinemas.

Shinkai has previously spoken about how Weathering With You will undoubtedly benefit from Kimi No Nawa, both in terms of creative process and publicity.
