After two amazing seasons of the Korean series ‘Kingdom’ on Netflix, a sidequel will be released on the streaming service later this year. One question that has been on many fans’ minds is why a sidequel was being made instead of a third season following the events of the previous season. In a recent press con, ‘Kingdom’ writer Kim Eun-hee shared her insights on the decision.
Ashin is one of the main characters in the show and Writer Kim shares that she was trying to tell a story about Ashin when she realized that she had to touch on the very important mystery of the resurrection plant. “I felt it would be more apt to tackle that in a spin-off than incorporating it into the regular season to make it more interesting,” she explains. Director Kim Seong-hun adds that while the first two seasons laid the groundwork for the ‘Kingdom’ universe, the sidequel will be a building block on that foundation.
I’ve always had something in my mind about the resurrection plant,” Writer Kim reveals. “If the first two seasons weren’t hits, though, I wouldn’t have been able to make this special story.”
Some first look photos were also shown during the press con, including this very mysterious one of Jun Ji-hyun as Ashin, which was shot on Jeju Island:
Writer Kim explains that her garments show that she is a descendant of the traditional Northern tribe. “She is the lead and the clue to the mystery of the resurrection plant,” she reveals.
Production for ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ has already wrapped up and the team is currently working on post-production. Apparently, we can expect its release within the year – and we cannot wait!
