How I Got the Perfect Smile

Judging by the amount of coffee I drink, I never seriously considered whitening my teeth. I always thought that it would be a huge waste of money and despite giving home strips a try, they never did make a noticeable difference. It wasn’t until my love for a good skincare regime began that I felt like my teeth had some catching up to do.  I didn’t want to be the stereotypical Brit with the bad yellow teeth.

Most importantly, the Christmas season has arrived!

And we all know that Christmas season means selfie season, and I was hoping to show my teeth in at least half of my photos.

After much deliberation, I found myself Googling “teeth whitening in Manila.”  The next thing I knew, I was in an Uber on my way to Ampong Dental in Quezon City. For those of you who have not experienced teeth whitening in a dental clinic before, here’s a little insight into my experience.

The Process

The process was very straightforward and was conveniently completed in a single visit. It was broken down into three 15-minute sessions, which involved the following:

Gum Barrier Application

My mouth guard was fitted first.  Then, a blue gum barrier was squeezed on top of each tooth to prevent any burning or stinging sensation on the gums. It looks painful, but it really wasn’t!

Whitening formula (this includes 35% of Hydrogen peroxide) application on teeth surface.

A gel-like substance was injected onto the surface of each tooth. This was when the whitening magic happened. Check out this ever-so-flattering picture of me.

Laser light application

This was the fun part. I was given some 3D-looking glasses to wear while my mouth was placed in front of a piece of dental technology with a bright laser light directed at it.This lasted for 15 minutes.

Rinse

My favorite part of the whitening process! Nothing is more satisfying than a clean minty mouth!

Some Tips and Thoughts

It was a very simple procedure and all in all, it took a little over an hour from start to finish. This included a chit chat with Dra. Camille before and after the session.

I was informed that I may feel some sensitivity, particularly during the second and third sessions, but I was surprised that I felt nothing at all. I felt a little sensitivity later that day when I was eating hot soup, but that was about it.

I was told to relax during each of the 15-minute laser light treatments. Personally, I would advise you to lean the chair back as far as is comfortable for you. I didn’t find sitting upright to be particularly enjoyable. 15 minutes doesn’t sound like a long time, but it can be if you’re stuck in one position.

Now for some TMI… I discovered that I’m a big drooler (much to my embarrassment). So, ensuring that the suction tube is placed correctly under the tongue also prevented any further awkwardness.

Another thing  to understand is that you cannot choose what shade of white your teeth will become. It is all dependent on what your shade is before the procedure. However, you ARE guaranteed teeth that is 5 – 7 shades lighter.
