During the main discussion, everyone was asked to describe ‘homegrown music’ in one word. I gathered their answers and compiled 10 one-word descriptions of what homegrown music is all about.

  • Love

For every person who lives and breathes music, music is just love. You give your heart, emotions and everything else into music. It makes you happy, it makes you cry, sometimes it makes you sleepless at night, sometimes you just can’t get enough of it. Because of the plain reason that you love it. And it loves you back.

  • Authenticity

Filipino talent is unique and one-of-a-kind. It’s truly ours, it’s something that separates us or distinguishes us from other races. When you hear Filipino music, it’s so relatable, so us.

  • Better

Music in our country has definitely grown and matured into a much, much better and I couldn’t stress enough how great our talents have become.

  • Passion

Like love, Filipino music is full of passion. Every piece made comes from the deepest and sincerest part of our hearts that when you listen and immerse yourself with it, you just drown into this pithole full of desire and appetite for great music.

  • Diverse

We are creative and we know how to adapt to different kinds of music, and still make it sound terrific. Different genres don’t scare us. As long as it’s music, we sing, we listen.

  • Pride

Just the sense of pride, something that makes us shout, loud and proud, “Pinoy ‘yan!” Just the thought of having numerous notable artists in the country is an honor in itself.

  • Alive

WE.ARE. ALIVE! And to whoever says that Filipino music has long been dug and buried into the innermost layers of earth, well, you thought wrong. Seek, and ye shall find. Believe me you’ll be amazed to know that our music is very much booming and kicking.

  • Brave

From trying various types of music to breaking out from our shell and going worldwide, we are making buzz and we are not afraid to show the world that our flair for music is extraordinary and deserves to be recognized.

  • World-class

We are around the world and our music is undeniably one of the best-est there is. We can compete with other big bands or even stand out amongst them. There are many astonishing acts around who are proudly Pinoy! We’re making a huge mark in this industry.

  • Astig!

We’re soild, we’re uniquely cool. Need I say more?

While the speakers took on the spotlight, I was close to tears as I realised that there are still people who, like me, believe in Filipino talent, that there is hope as long as we ourselves trust in what we have. It’s a happy feeling and it inspired me so much that this faith that I have was renewed.

That afternoon was a completely uplifting and invigorating moment for me. While Cattski and Carlos performed for us, I couldn’t help but feel proud of being a Filipino, knowing the fact that I’ll always love being one. I’m so proud of them, stepping out and raising the Filipino flag and showcasing their great music. The passion inside the coffee shop was overpowering.
