After Netflix booted the wacky and irreverent, yet empowering animated series Tuca and Bertie last year, it has become a constant question in fans’ minds whether the show will ever see the light of day again for a well-deserved new season. Now, we’ve got our answer: Tuca and Bertie are officially coming back, thanks to Adult Swim!
The network has come to the show’s rescue, as announced on Twitter today, and will be granting it 10 new episodes which will air in 2021. Reacting to the news, series creator Lisa Hanawalt, who is also the former producer and artist of beloved Netflix show BoJack Horseman, said: “I’ve been a fan of Adult Swim shows since my teens, so I’m thrilled to bring my beloved fowl to the party and be a new voice for a fresh decade of absurd, irreverent, yet heartwarming adult animation.”
Tuca and Bertie, which premiered in May 2019, follows two 30-year-old best friends (voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong) who navigate through their adult lives dealing with fears of commitment, career woes, family issues, sexual discrimination, and childhood trauma. Despite earning critical praise, the show wasn’t renewed.
“Everyone is still glowing over the reviews and articles and feedback. T&B is critically acclaimed and has repeatedly been called one of the best new shows of the year,” Lisa remarked in a tweet at the time. “None of this makes a difference to an algorithm, but it’s important to me and the way I want to continue making art in this world.”
As someone who was greatly entertained and moved by the story of Tuca and Bertie, I’m overjoyed that it’s finally making its much-awaited return. I’ll be counting down the days until season two premieres!
