Did you know that during pre-colonization, we Filipinos were into Brown Rice?  We were then introduced to its white counterpart which at that time availed by the privileged-society and not for long we all got curious and eventually forgot about Brown Rice.  The Good Food Project, aims to bring back Brown Rice as our regular staple food.Â
First of all, it undergoes only one milling process which means in terms of sustainability farmers can produce more and that our rice uses lesser carbon footprint. Second, the rice bran is still attached to the grain which contains essential nutrients. According to M. Frei and K. Becker, on Rice Biodiversity and Nutrients from University of Hohenheim in Germany: Brown Rice is high in dietary fiber, it is rich in B Vitamins, has high phytic acid which is an anti-oxidant and it also controls cholesterol levels from is unsaturated fatty acids. When it comes to the price, it may cost a little bit more but hopefully as more and more Filipinos consume Brown Rice, more farmers will produce it and it will become more affordable said Rash Catitativo of The Good Food Project. Again, don’t forget to buy locally produced Brown Rice to help our Filipino Farmers.Â
When it comes to Sev’s Cafe and their Advocacy, owned by Ipat Luna-Severino the Environmetal Lawyer and her husband Mr. Howie Severino who is an Award winning Broadcaster/Journalist, has three points for their Awareness Campaigns: (1) Breastfeeding, (2) Brown Rice and lastly (3) Effects of tobacco smoking to one’s health.Â
Rash Caritativo, The Project Head for The Good Food Project, closed the event with more information highlighting the benefits of Brown Rice like as a known cure for BeriBeri and again inviting all of us to try Brown Rice at least once a week for Brown Rice Biyernes.
