Last September 10, President Duterte signed Proclamation No. 1017 which declares July 17 of every year as “National Physiatry Day.”
According to the President, this is to raise awareness about the number of Filipinos who are undergoing rehabilitation medicine.
The proclamation states that “Given the growing number of patients with rehabilitation needs in the country, there is a need to strengthen support in providing accessible and affordable medication and rehabilitation to them by raising awareness and encouraging collaboration among relevant stakeholders.”
The proclamation also states that lower back pain and stroke are among the leading causes of acquired disability in the Philippines.
With this, Duterte prompted the Department of Health and other government agencies to promote projects that advocate for awareness on rehabilitation.
