If you’re wondering what’s happening, here’s a quick explainer:

Why is there a “surprise protest” along EDSA?

The gathering is a show of support from members of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) for Senator Rodante Marcoleta.

In a statement, INC spokesperson Bro. Edwil Zabala said the rally was organized in support of the senator after the Office of the Ombudsman announced on Monday, June 29, that it would file plunder charges against him.

The charges are in connection with campaign donations that the senator allegedly received during the 2025 elections.

Following the announcement, supporters began gathering as early as 2:00 AM on June 30. As of 9:30 AM, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) estimated that the number of rallyists had grown to around 9,000.

Major road closures and extra reminders for motorists

In an advisory posted by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), motorists are advised to expect traffic delays in the affected areas and find alternative routes.

Here are the following roads closed by the MMDA:

  • EDSA Ortigas Service Road (Northbound)
  • EDSA Ortigas Flyover (Northbound)
  • EDSA Ortigas Flyover (Southbound)
  • White Plains Avenue (Eastbound and Westbound)

The MMDA has also cooperated with the Philippine National Police to tow vehicles on EDSA in connection with the ongoing rally.

MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III said in the official statement that all vehicles blocking the road will be issued citation tickets and towed by the authorities.

Commuters who are looking for alternative routes may opt to ride the MRT-3, which will remain operational at all stations.

“Our station personnel and security teams are fully deployed across the line to maintain order, ensure passenger safety, and keep operations running smoothly,” DOTr MRT-3 said in a Facebook post.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) also added that all EDSA Busway stations will remain operational despite the heavy traffic caused by the rally.
