According to the 2022 public transit sub-index of the Urban Mobility Readiness Index (UMRI) 2022, Manila ranks 56th out of 60. This makes Metro Manila’s public transportation the fifth worst in the world. It is followed by Johannesburg in South Africa, Riyadh in South Arabia, Nairobi in Kenya, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

The results of the study were measured by “public transit density, efficiency, and utilization rate and the extent to which they can adapt to address competition from emerging mobility services”.

On average, the score was 51.7 percent but Metro Manila only scored 31.9 percent. The study pointed out that while we have jeepneys and metro lines as well as cycling infrastructure, we are lacking in terms of speed, density, affordability, and wait times.
