The last standing COVID-free province in PH just got hit with its first case

After 8 months of being COVID-free, the province of Batanes reported its first case on Monday, September 28. A locally stranded individual (LSI) who recently went back home to the province.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), “the COVID-19 case in Batanes has not been officially reported to DOH yet (as of 29 September 2020 database), but we have coordinated with the appropriate Center for Health Development (CHD) for relevant information. With Batanes recording a confirmed case, this means that all provinces have/had COVID-19 cases.”

Currently, the asymptomatic patient is isolated at the Batanes Resort. Close contacts of the patient, along with other LSIs, are all under quarantine and are being closely monitored.

Due to the first confirmed case, the province of Batanes has begun to implement enhanced measures to prevent the disease from being transmitted, which will take place from September 30 until October 13, 2020. These include proper social distancing and wearing the proper face masks and shields. Similarly, minors below 21 years old, pregnant women, the elderly, and other individuals at risk are asked to stay at home. Only one member per household can leave to purchase essential items, for work, or for emergency reasons only.
