University of the Philippines takes Top 7 spot in world university rankings for health research citations

The University of the Philippines is among the top universities in the world in terms of health research citations, according to the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

UP garnered an overall score of 98.8 for citations in clinical, pre-clinical and health researches. It was able to outrank prominent institutions like Harvard University, Oxford University, and Stanford University.

According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, “citation scores indicate the number of times a research has been cited in other research outputs. The score serves as an indicator of the impact or influence of a research project which other researchers use as reference from which they can build on succeeding breakthroughs or innovations.”

They also claimed that they have been supporting projects from UP in the fields of genomics, diagnostics, and drug discovery, among others. It has also been working closely with UP Manila as one of the implementing institutions of the Philippine National Health Research System.

Tokyo Metropolitan University garnered a perfect score of 100 and is placed first in the rankings. It is followed by the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico, the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Jordan, the University of Canberra in Australia, and Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

In terms of the overall university rankings in the fields of medicine, dentistry, and other health subjects, UP is placed in the 126th to 150th spot.
