Beauty Trend Alert: Gua Sha Facial

Have you ever heard of Gua Sha?

This new beauty trend did not just stem from those jade rollers that people use at home for their skincare. Gua Sha is actually a form of Chinese medicine that means ‘to scrape sand’.

We were able to try a Gua Sha Facial at Luminisce Holistic Skin Innovations in Molito, Alabang and we had a quick chat with Dr.

Kaycee Reyes about what makes Gua Sha facial unique from the other treatments at the clinic.

Gua Sha uses specific flat and curved handheld tools, such as a buffalo horn, a round lid, a coin, or precious stones such as rose quartz and jade. The treatment can be done on the face and on the body, such as on the arms, legs, back, and buttocks.

Gua Sha is best for lymphatic drainage, depuffing, and soothing the skin. The benefits for the skin are better than the benefits of home treatments with jade rollers. Since the treatment uses massage-like strokes, it helps improve stress (this is why I fell asleep during the treatment), improve circulation, ease pain and fatigue, and remove toxins. After the treatment, you have to stay lying in bed for at least five minutes because your lympathic drainage has to adjust and you might get dizzy right after.

Since Gua Sha is a form of traditional Chinese medicine, it also unblocks the body’s energy called chi or qi, and restores its balance to relieve tension and inflammation. The strokes used also promote a glowing and energized appearance, and lift the skin, especially around the face.

The Gua Sha facial is available at Luminisce BGC, Podium and Alabang.
