While a second movie for the recent DC hit has been confirmed for some time now, people have still been grappling for news about when this supposed sequel is planned to be released. Though the DC slate seems quite full for the following years, from The Joker coming out this October to scores of planned movies like Batgirl, fans are already eagerly awaiting the second installment of this superhero tale.

But we may have gotten the first hints at scheduling for the Shazam sequel. Zachary Levi, who took on the title role of the film, recently spoke on the topic at Germany’s CCXP Cologne convention. He shared that he was still very much in the dark but knew they were working on the sequel already:
I know that I’m gonna have a conversation with my bosses pretty soon about what the idea is and where we’re going with the new movie, but all I really know is that New Line, our studio, and Warner Brothers, our parent studio, and DC, and our producers and executives and everybody who’s involved in all of the decision making, they’re all very happy with what we did. They want to do even better the second time around, and they are crafting a story right now as we speak about what that sequel is going to be.

But if he had to guess, Levi estimated that the sequel may come out sooner than expected:
The only other thing I know is they want to make it as soon as possible because those kids are growing up like weeds, so if we don’t do that in like the next two days, they’re gonna be full grown adults […]
So if we don’t shoot another movie real quick, then they’re just gonna be men. There’s no point in saying ‘Shazam’ to transform, they’re already transformed! So that’s all I can tell you about the sequel, but I’m very excited to get into it, making it, and I hope you all enjoy it when we do.

Director David F. Sandberg will be returning to helm the film, while writer Henry Gayden and producer Peter Safran will likewise continue their work on the movie. A clash against archnemesis Black Adam has been mentioned when speaking of the third installment of the franchise, but no clues as to a possible sequel plot have been given so far.
