Read this Guide Before Getting Your Next Pair of Eyeglasses

Picture this: you’re in the store looking for a new pair of eyeglasses when you saw a cat-eye pair. It looks like the same specs your favorite celebrity wore on one of their Instagram posts. If it looked good on them, then maybe it would look good on you, too, right? So you try to look at the mirror while trying it on only to realize that it doesn’t meet your expectations. It’s okay. Our faces come in different shapes and sizes and some frames might not be suited for your face, but there sure is another frame out there that will complement your face well. With this guide, we’ll help you find the frame shape that best suits you!

The first step is to figure out what shape your face is. To know what your face shape is, look directly into the mirror and note the contours of your face and head. Below are 5 common face shapes and how to know if it’s the shape you’re looking for.

5. Oval

How to know if you have an oval face:

  • If the length of your face is wider than the width of your cheekbones
  • If your forehead is wider than your jawline
  • If the angle of your jaw is rounded

If you have an oval-shaped face, then we have good news for you. Due to this shape’s good proportion, the oval shape is the most versatile. You can basically wear anything! While you can get away with many frames, the rule of thumb is to choose one that are as wide as the broadest part of your face. Avoid frames that are too wide as it might ruin the perfect balance of your proportions.

4. Round

How to know if you have a round face:

  • If your cheekbones and face length have similar measurements
  • If your forehead and jawline have similar measurements
  • If the angle of your jaw is rounded

Since people with round faces lack the angles of other face shapes, it is highly-recommended for you to choose a frame that is angular. This is to complement the softness and curviness of your face. A few recommendations are wayfarers or browline glasses.

3. Oblong

How to know if you have an oblong face:

  • If the measurement of your face length is the largest
  • If your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline have similar measurements

Since oblong faces are longer than they are wide, the goal is to find a frame that will make your face appear shorter. To balance your features, focus on large, thick, and angular frames like the one Superman wears.

2. Heart

How to know if you have a heart-shaped face:

  • If your forehead is the widest part of your body
  • If you have a slender jawline
  • If you have a widow’s peak (optional)

To balance your slender jawline and pointed chin, it is recommended to choose styles that angle outward at the bottom. A few examples of this are aviators and cat-eye frames. Try to avoid frames that are wide on the top like semi-rimmed glasses as it will emphasize the widest part of your face.

1. Square

How to know if you have a square face:

  • If your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw have the same width
  • If your face has minimal curves
  • If your jawline is very angular

Since your face is very angular, find a shape that will complement it with round glasses. So if you’re a fan of Harry Potter or John Lennon, don’t be afraid to rock their signature round glasses.
