‘RENT Live’ is Fox’s new live musical production. It follows the format of shows like ‘Grease Live’ and ‘Hairspray Live’ that was shot live and aired in real time, to mimic the experience of an actual theatre production. It is set to air on January 27, 2019, at 7 PM (ET).
The story of RENT follows a group of friends in New York City at the time of the AIDS epidemic. It is a rock musical that focuses on love, sexuality, and art. Fox describes it as “the groundbreaking musical is a re-imagining of Puccini’s “La Bohème,” set in New York City’s gritty East Village, which tells the unforgettable story of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams during a time of great social and political turmoil.”
Leading the cast will be Jordan Fisher (Hamilton) as Mark, Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Grease Live, Gigi) as Maureen, Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert) as Tom Collins, Tinashe (Dancing With the Stars) as Mimi, and Valentina (RuPaul’s Drag Race) as Angel.

Keala Settle (Greatest Showman) will be making a special appearance in the opening song, “Seasons of Love”. Though she isn’t featured in the preview yet, you can watch a snippet of the cast rehearsing it here:
