It saddens me to think that here in the Philippines, people don’t seem to look forward to retirement. Everyone just wants to keep working because the moment they stop, the money also stops. So what happens when life takes over?
A few days ago, a friend of this 60 year old woman messaged the WhenInManila.com team in hopes of asking for help. Aling Nida, who just turned 60 has grown ill and the family is at a lost as to where to get help. Read her story below:
“Nida Molina, 60 years old, August 28, 1955. Kasalukuyang nakatira sa 696 road 2 Tandang sora avenue, Old balara. May dalawang anak na babae, sa magkaibang relasyon na lalake, pero hiwalay na. Si Nida ang tumatayong bread winner sa kanyang dalawang anak na babae, nagtratrabaho bilang labandera.
Ang panganay na anak ni Aling Nida ay pumasok na kasambahay sa isang pamilya, kasama ang kanyang asawa at tatlong anak. Ang bunsong anak na babae ni Aling Nida ang kasalukuyang kasama niya sa bahay. Ayon kay Mrs. Gutierrez-Occidental na kaibigan ni Aling Nida, ang bunsong anak, 19 years old, ay naanakan umano ng kung sinong lalake. Dagdag pa ni Mrs. Gutierrez-Occidental, Humihingi raw si Aling Nida ng pagkain sa mga kakilala nito ng konting pagkain para iabot sa kanya kanyang bunsong anak at apo na babae. Minsan raw ay pumapasok bilang helper sa karinderia ang anak ni Aling Nida.
Ang bahay ni Aling Nida ay gawa lamang sa barong-barong at hindi konkretong sahig kundi lupa. Mababang bubong at walang mga bintana, at hindi nagkaroon ng kuryente kahit minsan.
Dahil sa kakulangan ng pagkain ay kaya maraming iniindang sakit si Aling Nida, payat at malnourished ang katawan nito. Ayon kay Mrs.Gutierrez-Occidental, ang sakit raw ni Aling Nida ay Pneumonia at Enlargement of heart. Pero ang tingin raw ni Mrs. Gutierrez-Occidental ay may sakit sa Kidney ang matanda dahil manas raw ito.
Dinala siya sa ospital ng East avenue para ipagamot. Ngunit, inilabas din siya agad dahil sa kakulangan ng pera at sa daming mga pasyente na pending.
Nag-published si Mrs. Anita Gutierrez-Occidental sa kanya Facebook account para humingi ng pansin sa mga kaibigan niya para matulongan ang kanyang kumare may sakit at hirap sa buhay na si Aling Nida.”

Rough English Translation:
“Nida Molina, 60 years old, August 28, 1955. Currently residing at 696 road 2 Tandang sora avenue, Old balara. She has 2 daughters, both separated from their partner. Nida stands as the breadwinner for her 2 daughters and works as a laundrywoman.
Her eldest daughter worked as a maid together with her husband and 3 children. She currently lives with youngest daughter. According to Mrs. Gutierrez-Occidental, her youngest daughter was impregnated by some guy. Hence, Aling Nida works harder by begging for food to give to her daughters and granddaughter. At times, her daughter would work as a helper at local canteens.
Aling Nida’s house is merely a shanty, its floors without concrete, its ceiling low and windows not present. Moreover, she never had electricity in her house.
It is due to her lack of funds to buy proper food that Aling Nida grew ill. She is very thin and malnourished. She is said to have pneumonia and enlargement of the heart. However, according to her friend Mrs. Gutierrez-Occidental, she may also be having bad kidneys because of her beri-beri.
She was brought to the East Avenue hospital for a check up. However, she was also released immediatley after due to lack of funds and overpopulation in the hospital.
Mrs. Anita also shared this story on her Facebook page in hopes of getting help from other friends for Aling Nida.”
